But before you reach for fertiliser, it&#8217;s worth looking at the real cause &ndash; because often it&#8217;s not that there&#8217;s too little nutrient, but simply that the plant can&#8217;t take it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a few simple rules, you can read the leaf symptoms to tell which nutrient is missing &ndash; and take the right corrective action instead of fertilising blindly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check first: the pH value<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common &ldquo;hidden&rdquo; deficiency arises from a wrong <strong>pH value<\/strong>. If it&#8217;s outside the ideal range of roughly <strong>5.5 to 6.5<\/strong>, individual nutrients become chemically locked and are no longer available to the roots &ndash; even though they&#8217;re present in the solution. So if your plant shows deficiency symptoms, always measure the pH first before adding more fertiliser. In many cases the problem disappears through the pH correction alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most important trick: mobile and immobile nutrients<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which leaves the symptom appears on first reveals the nutrient:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li><strong>Mobile nutrients<\/strong> (nitrogen, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus) are relocated by the plant to the young shoots when in short supply. Nitrogen is highly mobile &ndash; which is why the plant &ldquo;sacrifices&rdquo; the old leaves first to supply the young shoots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Iron deficiency (Fe)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here the <strong>young leaves<\/strong> yellow, while the leaf veins stay conspicuously <strong>green<\/strong> (interveinal chlorosis). Iron deficiency in hydroponics is almost always a pH problem &ndash; when the pH is too high, iron is chemically unavailable even if there&#8217;s enough in the solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other common deficiencies at a glance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li><strong>Potassium (K):<\/strong> brown, burnt-looking leaf margins on older leaves.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Magnesium (Mg):<\/strong> interveinal chlorosis on older leaves, with the veins staying green.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Calcium (Ca):<\/strong> stunted, deformed young shoots; in tomatoes the typical blossom-end rot (black patches on the underside of the fruit).<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Phosphorus (P):<\/strong> dark-green to reddish-purple discolouration on older leaves, inhibited growth.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t forget the EC value and water quality<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides the pH, it&#8217;s worth checking the <strong>EC value<\/strong>: if it&#8217;s too low, the plant simply gets too few nutrients (under-feeding). If it&#8217;s too high, burns can occur that resemble a deficiency. Very hard tap water can also cause imbalances &ndash; when in doubt, using filtered or reverse-osmosis water with a freshly mixed nutrient solution afterwards helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to do about a deficiency?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work through it in order: measure the pH and bring it into the 5.5&ndash;6.5 range, check the EC value, and when in doubt <strong>mix up a completely fresh nutrient solution<\/strong>. Use a balanced complete hydroponic nutrient rather than individual nutrients as long as you don&#8217;t know the cause for certain &ndash; that way you avoid replacing one imbalance with a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sulphur, manganese and boron in brief<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside the well-known deficiencies there are rarer ones: <strong>sulphur<\/strong> shows through evenly pale young leaves, <strong>manganese<\/strong> through interveinal chlorosis with small spots on young leaves, and <strong>boron<\/strong> through stunted shoot tips. Since these are immobile, the symptoms appear at the top. In practice, a good complete nutrient covers these trace elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to narrow down a deficiency systematically<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proceed in four steps: first, check the pH value. Second, look at whether old or young leaves are affected first. Third, interpret the symptom pattern (even yellowing, chlorosis between the veins, margins, spots). Fourth, check the EC value. This sequence leads to the cause faster than random re-fertilising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A photo diary helps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photograph conspicuous leaves over several days. That way you can tell whether a symptom is spreading or receding after a pH correction.
