A recent discovery in the code of a test build indicates that Google is working on an alternative: unlocking the device using the linked Google Account.<\/p>\n<h2>Return of a Familiar Recovery Feature<\/h2>\n<p>As reported by tech outlet &#8220;Android Authority&#8221; during a code teardown of the preview build Android 17 QPR 2 Beta 5, Google is preparing a comeback for this method. Android 4.4, a similar option existed to unlock phones via the credentials of the linked account if the screen lock was forgotten. With the release of Android 5.0, however, Google removed this mechanism to bolster theft protection and prevent unauthorized access to found or stolen devices.<\/p>\n<h2>Convenience vs. Security Risk<\/h2>\n<p>Eliminating the requirement for a factory reset would save users a significant amount of hassle in the future. In particular, local documents, media, or chat histories that have not yet been synced to the cloud would be preserved if someone forgets their PIN.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the feature raises security concerns: if unauthorized individuals gain physical access to the smartphone and also possess the login credentials for the associated Google Account, they could easily bypass the device lock. For this reason, security-conscious users will likely be able to disable the account-recovery option. The feature is not yet functional in the current beta; when and to what extent it will launch on production devices remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<h2>How Users Can Prevent Data Loss Right Now<\/h2>\n<p>Until Google officially rolls out the feature, regular backups remain the only effective safeguard against data loss following a factory reset.
