The company announced this on October 1, 2026.<\/p>\n<h2>Protection Against Wire Fraud and Keyloggers<\/h2>\n<p>Android&#8217;s accessibility services were originally developed to make operating smartphones easier for people with disabilities\u2014for example, by reading screen content aloud or automating clicks. In the past, however, cybercriminals exploited these powerful permissions. Dangerous malware repeatedly abused system interfaces to read screens without users&#8217; knowledge, intercept PIN entries, or display spoofed login overlays on top of online banking apps. users. Only verified tools that have completed an official review process and are explicitly classified as &#8220;Accessibility Tools&#8221; will be granted access to the interface when the protection is active. Legitimate assistive technologies for people with disabilities will remain fully functional as usual once verified.<\/p>\n<h2>Forensic Logging and Hardware Locks<\/h2>\n<p>The access restriction is part of a package of six security features Google is rolling out for the Advanced Protection Program in Android 17:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Intrusion Logging:<\/strong> Upon separate manual consent, the system records security and network events and stores them end-to-end encrypted in the cloud. The data is retained on a rolling 12-month basis before deletion. At the web level, forensic logging also extends to Chrome&#8217;s Incognito mode.<\/li>\n<li><strong>USB Protection:<\/strong> When locked, supported devices (Pixel 6 and later, as well as select Android 17 smartphones) restrict the USB port exclusively to charging. Data connections remain blocked until the device is unlocked.<\/li>\n<li><strong>WebGPU Deactivation:<\/strong> To minimize attack surfaces in the mobile browser, the protection mode completely disables the WebGPU interface.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Failed Authentication Lock:<\/strong> If authentication attempts within system settings or protected apps repeatedly fail, the mobile device locks itself automatically.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transparency Dashboard:<\/strong> A dedicated settings dashboard lists which installed applications query the device&#8217;s current protection status.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Availability and Practical Details<\/h2>\n<p>These new restrictions will not apply automatically to all owners of an Android 17 device. The entire security suite remains optional and is activated only when users explicitly turn on the enhanced protection mode.
