The contract is set to expire on 12 November 2026.<\/strong><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Background: SpaceX acquires Cursor maker Anysphere<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anysphere, the company behind the popular AI coding editor Cursor, was acquired by SpaceX in an all-stock deal in mid-August 2026, according to multiple media reports. Citing an SEC filing (Form 8-K), financial outlets put the value at roughly 60 billion US dollars, which would make it the largest start-up acquisition to date. Cursor is reportedly to operate as a subsidiary within a new AI division of the group. Some finer details across the coverage appear inconsistent.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">OpenAI\u2019s reasoning: a lack of trust<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI said it is winding down the contract at the latest possible date \u2013 12 November 2026 \u2013 to keep access open for developers as long as it can. The stated reason is a lack of trust: the company said it cannot be confident that SpaceX will use the technology within its terms of service, pointing to earlier contract breaches by Musk-owned companies. The existing agreement reportedly included a change-of-ownership clause.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What it means for Cursor users<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The impact on users is likely to be limited.
