Selbst scheinbar leerer Raum beeinflusst demnach, wie sich Licht ausbreitet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Was Heisenberg vorhersagte<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nach der Quantenelektrodynamik ist ein \u201eperfektes Vakuum&#8221; nicht wirklich leer, sondern erf\u00fcllt von virtuellen Teilchen, die st\u00e4ndig kurz auftauchen und wieder verschwinden. In extrem starken Magnetfeldern sollten diese das Vakuum optisch aktiv machen \u2013 es \u201edoppelbricht&#8221; das hindurchlaufende Licht. Auf der Erde ist der Effekt viel zu schwach, um ihn zu messen; ein Magnetar mit seinem gigantischen Magnetfeld liefert das kosmische Labor daf\u00fcr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Der Nachweis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Das Team beobachtete den Magnetar 1E 1547.0\u20135408 mit dem NASA-R\u00f6ntgenteleskop IXPE, unterst\u00fctzt vom Instrument NICER auf der ISS und dem Parkes-Radioteleskop (CSIRO). Zwei Signaturen deuten auf den Effekt hin: Die R\u00f6ntgenstrahlung war extrem stark polarisiert, und die Polarisationsrichtung war an das Magnetfeld des Sterns \u201egekoppelt&#8221; \u2013 genau wie bei den Radiowellen.
