To this day it is carried mostly by a worldwide community of volunteers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From a student&#8217;s announcement to a foundation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Debian dates back to 16 August 1993, when Ian Murdock \u2013 then a student at Purdue University \u2013 announced the creation of a new Linux distribution. The name &#8220;Debian&#8221; is a portmanteau of &#8220;Debra&#8221;, the name of his girlfriend at the time, and &#8220;Ian&#8221;.<\/p><div id=\"netgu-1557023700\" class=\"netgu-content derivatives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">33 years later, Debian is used by millions of people \u2013 directly or through one of its many derivative distributions such as the hugely popular Ubuntu or Linux Mint. The current stable release &#8220;Trixie&#8221; comprises around 69,830 packages, and there are more than 400 derived distributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For &#8220;Debian Day 2026&#8221;, at least 19 community meetings are taking place across three continents \u2013 including in Bolivia, Brazil, Germany, India, Indonesia and Turkey.
