The honest verdict up front: Powerline is a pragmatic stopgap, not an equal replacement for a real network cable. For a single AP in a room with no wired connection, it can still be the most sensible option.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Powerline works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Powerline kit consists of at least two adapters. The first plugs into an outlet near the router or switch and connects to the network via Ethernet. The second adapter plugs into an outlet at the target location. Both adapters modulate the network signal as a high-frequency carrier wave onto the 230-volt power line and filter it back out at the other end. Your house wiring becomes the transmission medium \u2013 with no new cabling to run. Setup takes only a few minutes: plug the adapters in, pair them briefly, done. That very simplicity makes Powerline attractive for spontaneous or rental situations where drilling and pulling cable is not an option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Important for planning: Powerline only replaces the <strong>uplink<\/strong>. The UniFi access point then connects via a short LAN cable to the remote Powerline adapter. So Powerline is not a Wi-Fi technology but a wired bridge between two outlets. The Wi-Fi itself is still generated by the UniFi AP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advertised gross vs. real speed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The numbers on the box \u2013 &#8220;1200 Mbit\/s,&#8221; &#8220;2400 Mbit\/s&#8221; \u2013 are PHY-layer gross figures, not usable data rates. Vendors such as TP-Link themselves point out that the advertised speed is not reached in real operation, because line noise and protocol overhead eat a large share. In practice the actually usable rate is often only around 20 to 30 percent of the gross figure \u2013 and the exact share depends heavily on your particular house wiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concretely: an AV kit advertised at &#8220;500 Mbit\/s&#8221; often delivers only about 50 to 60 Mbit\/s of real throughput in daily use. A modern AV2 kit can achieve more under good conditions, but of all things the AV2 MIMO technology often has a worse gross-to-net conversion rate than simpler adapters. For AP planning, count realistically on a fraction of the box number, not on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Latency and stability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides speed, consistency matters. Compared with a real cable, Powerline shows higher and, above all, fluctuating latency, because the transmission adapts dynamically to line quality. When a large appliance switches on, the rate briefly drops. For browsing, streaming and video calls over a single AP this is usually fine. For time-critical uses such as competitive gaming or many simultaneous users, the fluctuation is noticeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Comparison with the alternatives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ranking for connecting an AP is fairly clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Real Ethernet cable (Cat 5e\/6):<\/strong> First choice. Full gigabit rate, minimal latency, PoE for the AP possible, rock solid. If at all feasible, run it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>MoCA over coax:<\/strong> Where antenna or cable-TV lines already exist, MoCA is usually faster and more stable than Powerline, because the shielded coaxial cable is far less noisy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Powerline:<\/strong> The pragmatic compromise when neither Ethernet nor coax is available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wireless mesh (UniFi Wireless Uplink):<\/strong> Only when no cabling at all is possible. The wireless uplink costs bandwidth and shares the medium with the clients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typical pitfalls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Different circuits and phases:<\/strong> The biggest brake. If both adapters sit on the same phase, Powerline runs optimally. Across different phases of a three-phase supply, the signal has to bridge the bus bars in the distribution board \u2013 which drops the rate significantly or prevents the connection. Only a phase coupler in the fuse box helps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Power strips and pass-through plugs:<\/strong> Multi-outlet strips, especially with surge protection, filter the Powerline signal away. Always plug adapters directly into the wall outlet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interfering appliances:<\/strong> Power supplies, LED dimmers, chargers and motors create noise on the line and lower throughput. Models with an integrated filtered outlet help somewhat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Long distance and old wiring:<\/strong> The longer and older the line, the greater the loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommendation: for which situation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Powerline is worthwhile if you want to run a single UniFi AP in a room without a wired connection, the target and source outlets are probably on the same phase, and demands are moderate \u2013 home office, guest Wi-Fi, one floor up. For load-bearing uplinks, multiple APs or demanding use, you should run a cable or check MoCA. Buy on a trial basis from a retailer with a return policy and measure the real throughput before you commit. That way Powerline stays an honest stopgap \u2013 and not a disappointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frequently Asked Questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can I power a UniFi AP directly via Powerline?<\/strong> No. Powerline supplies only the data connection. The AP needs separate PoE (for example via a PoE injector at the remote adapter) or a power supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is Powerline faster than a Wi-Fi mesh?<\/strong> Often yes, and more stable, because the medium is not shared with the Wi-Fi clients.
