Concrete, walls and distance tear holes into your network – in the basement, the guest room or the back of the garage. UniFi solves this cleanly: an additional access point wired over a LAN cable is the best fix, and even without a cable there are workable options. This guide shows step by step how to reliably cover dead spots.

Why dead spots happen in the first place

WiFi is radio, and radio loses energy on its way to the device. Three factors combine: distance, obstacles and frequency. The farther the signal travels, the weaker it gets – and every wall costs extra. Reinforced concrete, solid masonry, underfloor heating and mirrored glass are especially harsh. That is exactly why the basement is so tricky: the signal has to pass down through a concrete ceiling, and then a load-bearing wall often blocks the rest of the way.

Frequency adds to it. 5 GHz and 6 GHz deliver plenty of speed but penetrate walls worse than the older 2.4 GHz band. A single router cannot cheat this physics – more transmit power barely helps, because the phone’s reply has to make it back too. So the answer is not “transmit harder” but “get closer”: put a second transmitter where the signal is missing.

The best fix: an additional access point over a LAN cable

An additional UniFi access point connected over a network cable (wired uplink) beats every other method. The AP receives its data over Cat cable at full speed and gets power via PoE over the same cable – one line is enough. Every radio is fully available to clients: no detour, no halving of throughput and no added latency.

Here is how to do it:

Run a Cat6 cable from the switch or router to near the dead spot. For the basement, a single hole through the ceiling is often enough.

Connect the AP to a PoE switch or PoE injector. Make sure the switch has enough PoE budget.

Adopt the AP in the UniFi Network app. It shows up automatically once it is on the network.

Use the same SSID as your other APs so devices roam seamlessly.

One important note: in the wired AP’s device settings, disable wireless meshing. Otherwise, on a brief cable dropout, the AP can silently switch to a slow wireless uplink – a common and hard-to-find fault.

No cable possible? These alternatives work

Wireless mesh with UniFi

UniFi APs can link to each other over radio (mesh). That is convenient but comes at a cost: the AP uses the same radio for the link to the main AP and for its clients. In practice, each wireless “hop” roughly halves the available throughput, plus a bit more latency. So stick to a maximum of one, at most two hops, and make sure the mesh AP still has good reception to the main AP. If it sits in the dead spot itself, it will not help.

Powerline or MoCA as an uplink

When radio cannot reach the basement, your existing house wiring provides a substitute “wire.” Powerline carries network data over the mains wiring, MoCA over existing coaxial (TV) cabling. A short LAN cable runs from the adapter to the UniFi AP, which then works like a wired AP. Powerline is temperamental – old wiring and separate circuits slow it down – but often still more stable than weak mesh into the basement. MoCA is usually faster but needs coaxial outlets.

AP placement: the biggest lever

The best AP is useless in the wrong spot. Ground rules:

Mount it as centrally as possible to the area you want to cover, not in a corner of the house.

Do not hide it in cabinets, behind a TV or in a metal enclosure – that strongly attenuates the signal.

Place it on the ceiling or high on a wall; UniFi APs radiate broadly downward.

Keep distance from large metal surfaces, underfloor heating and water pipes.

For the basement, an AP on the basement ceiling or high in the stairwell radiating downward is often enough.

Use channels and bands correctly

2.4 GHz reaches farther and passes through walls better – ideal for tricky corners and the basement, but slower and quickly crowded. 5 GHz and 6 GHz bring much more speed but less range. A good setup offers both bands under the same SSID and lets UniFi steer who belongs where.

For channels: in the 2.4 GHz band use only 1, 6 or 11, because everything else overlaps. The 5 GHz band has many channels – let UniFi pick automatically, or assign neighboring APs different channels so they do not interfere with each other.

UniFi features for clean roaming

Band Steering: Nudges capable devices from the slow 2.4 GHz band to the faster 5 GHz band. Leave it enabled.

Fast Roaming (802.11k/v/r): Enables near-seamless transitions between APs. Turn it on, but briefly test very old devices afterward.

Minimum RSSI: Disconnects devices clinging to a too-weak AP (“sticky clients”) so they associate with the closer AP. A starting value of around −75 dBm works well; only fine-tune it once there is enough overlap.

Common mistakes

Placing the mesh AP too far away – it ends up on a weak signal itself.

Hiding the AP in a cabinet or corner instead of mounting it centrally and in the open.

Leaving meshing enabled on wired APs (silent emergency wireless uplink).

Setting Min-RSSI too aggressively, so devices get disconnected with no better target.

Betting on raw transmit power instead of moving a second AP closer to the dead spot.

Which APs fit?

For indoor use, the current WiFi 6 models of the U6 series (e.g. U6+ or U6 Pro) and the newer WiFi 7 models of the U7 series are a good choice – strong but not overpriced. For the basement, where coverage matters more than top speed, a cheaper AP like the U6+ is often enough; the lost 6 GHz range hardly matters there. What matters most is the wired uplink – it delivers more than any pricier radio-only model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Won’t a WiFi repeater do the job too? A classic repeater works much like mesh and usually halves throughput, without UniFi’s central management. A wired AP is almost always better.

Do I need a separate SSID for each AP? No. Give all APs the same network name (SSID). UniFi and the devices handle the switch to whichever AP is best.

How many mesh hops are okay? Ideally just one. Every extra hop halves throughput again and noticeably raises latency.

Why is my phone in the basement still connected to the upstairs AP? That is a “sticky client.” Enabled Fast Roaming and a sensible Min-RSSI value solve the problem.

Do I need 6 GHz in the basement? Rarely. There, range and penetration count; 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz are usually plenty.

Show customer reviews

UbiQuiti UniFi 6 Lite Access Point Wi-Fi 6 with*

by Ubiquiti

268

                                            List Price: € 148.49
                                                                You Save: € 9.49 (-6%)

                             Price: € 139.00

                                                                Buy now at Amazon*
                                                                                    Price incl.
