In 2026 you have several VPN options built right into the UniFi Network controller. For single-client access from a Windows 11 PC, the short answer is: the WireGuard VPN Server, or alternatively Teleport. This guide explains the differences and shows the quick setup.

<rect x="0" y="0" width="820" height="300" fill="#f7f9fc"/><rect x="30" y="120" width="180" height="44" rx="8" fill="#dbeafe" stroke="#2563eb" stroke-width="2"/><text x="120" y="147" font-size="14" text-anchor="middle">Windows 11 · WireGuard</text><rect x="320" y="120" width="180" height="44" rx="8" fill="#dcfce7" stroke="#16a34a" stroke-width="2"/><text x="410" y="147" font-size="14" text-anchor="middle">Gateway (UDM/-Pro) · WireGuard server</text><rect x="610" y="120" width="180" height="44" rx="8" fill="#fef9c3" stroke="#ca8a04" stroke-width="2"/><text x="700" y="147" font-size="14" text-anchor="middle">Home network / LAN</text><line x1="210" y1="142" x2="312" y2="142" stroke="#5b6b7e" stroke-width="2"/><polygon points="312,137 320,142 312,147" fill="#5b6b7e"/><line x1="500" y1="142" x2="602" y2="142" stroke="#5b6b7e" stroke-width="2"/><polygon points="602,137 610,142 602,147" fill="#5b6b7e"/><text x="265" y="110" font-size="12" text-anchor="middle" fill="#64748b">encrypted tunnel</text><text x="410" y="210" font-size="13" text-anchor="middle" fill="#64748b">Remote access to NAS, cameras, shares – without open ports</text>
WireGuard remote access: the client builds an encrypted tunnel to the gateway.

The VPN options at a glance

UniFi bundles its VPN features in the network settings under VPN. Depending on your firmware and hardware, several methods are available that differ significantly in technology and purpose.

Why use a VPN at all instead of simply opening ports? A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and the UniFi gateway. Services on the home network (NAS, cameras, smart-home hub) stay unreachable from the internet, yet you are inside as if you were sitting at home. That is safer and lower-maintenance than exposing individual ports via port forwarding. Keep UniFi OS and the Network controller up to date so all modern VPN types are cleanly available.

WireGuard VPN Server

The WireGuard VPN Server has been integrated directly into UniFi Network for several releases now. WireGuard is modern, lean and fast, uses far less code than older protocols, and switches cleanly between Wi-Fi and cellular on mobile devices. You create a separate profile per client and import it as a file or QR code. For classic remote access from your own laptop or PC, this is the recommended choice in 2026.

Teleport

Teleport is Ubiquiti’s zero-config VPN. It is also based on WireGuard but spares you the manual configuration: you create an invitation in the controller, open it in the WiFiman app (iOS/Android, plus desktop) and connect with a single tap. Handy for quick access and sharing with guests. The catch: invitations are tied to a person and a device, and all traffic runs through your gateway’s WAN link (full tunnel).

L2TP/IPsec, OpenVPN and Site Magic

L2TP/IPsec is the legacy variant: broadly compatible because it is built into many operating systems without an extra client, but technically older and slower than WireGuard. OpenVPN was the standard for a long time, but current UniFi versions offer it only in a limited form or, depending on firmware, no longer for server operation at all, so check availability in your version. Site Magic, finally, is not a single-client VPN but permanently links two or more UniFi sites (site-to-site), federating gateways within the same UniFi account.

Which method for which purpose

The choice depends mainly on whether you are connecting a single client or linking entire sites.

Method

Use case

Advantage

Drawback

WireGuard VPN Server

Single access PC/laptop/phone

Fast, modern, full control

Needs a profile per client

Teleport

Quick access, sharing

Zero-config, one tap via app

Tied to person/device, full tunnel

L2TP/IPsec

Devices without an extra client

Broadly compatible, built in

Older, slower than WireGuard

Site Magic

Site coupling

Permanent, without NAT

UniFi sites only, no single client

To reach your home network from a Windows 11 PC you do not need site coupling. That rules out Site Magic (site-to-site) and the legacy protocols as soon as WireGuard is available. Two sensible candidates remain: the WireGuard VPN Server and Teleport.

Recommendation and quick WireGuard setup

Recommendation: For Windows 11 single-client access, use the WireGuard VPN Server if you want full control over routing and profiles and are working at the PC anyway. If you want maximum simplicity, mainly mobile use, or quick sharing with someone, Teleport via the WiFiman app is the more convenient choice. Both rely on WireGuard, so technically you cannot go wrong.

Here is roughly how the WireGuard setup works (the exact labels may vary slightly by UniFi Network version):

In the UniFi network settings under VPN, open the VPN Server section and create a new server of type WireGuard.

Name the server, set the port (default 51820) and DNS; if your line’s IP changes, a Dynamic DNS address for the clients is recommended.

Save the server. UniFi generates the required keys automatically.

Create a dedicated client profile for the PC and download the
.conf
file (or QR code for mobile devices).

On Windows 11, install the official WireGuard client, load the
.conf
via Import tunnel, and activate the tunnel.

It is important that your line is reachable from the outside (public IP or Dynamic DNS) and that the chosen UDP port is forwarded. After that, you have an encrypted connection from the Windows PC into your home network. Whether only your home-network traffic goes through the tunnel (split tunnel) or all of your internet traffic (full tunnel) is controlled in the client via the
AllowedIPs
in the profile. For pure access to local devices, the home-network range is enough, which saves bandwidth and latency.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Do I need a static IP address?

No. A public but changing IP is enough if you set up Dynamic DNS. With true CGNAT (no forwarded public line), however, a self-hosted server does not work reliably, in which case Teleport is the simpler solution.

WireGuard or Teleport, which is safer?

Both use the same WireGuard technology and are therefore equally secure at the protocol level. The difference lies in management: your own profiles with the WireGuard Server, person-bound invitations with Teleport.

Is OpenVPN still an option?

Only to a limited extent. Current UniFi versions clearly focus on WireGuard. Check in your firmware whether an OpenVPN server is even still offered; for new installations it is usually no longer worthwhile.

Sources: Ubiquiti Help Center – UniFi Gateway: Introduction to VPNs, Ubiquiti Help Center – UniFi Gateway: Teleport VPN

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-6258556257245998"
data-ad-slot="4559785002"
data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

WireGuard, Teleport or L2TP?
